CNY Eve Dinner

Well, my first ever CNY in Singapore. I was getting quite excited about it as it would be different. Unlike UK, no celebration whatsoever. Unlike Brunei, where it would've been a constant big family, eating affair. This year, it was just me, sis CW and her bf. Quiet, 'independant' CNY on our own...

Being the big sister, I tried to book a Chinese restaurant at the 11th hour to make sure we have a proper CNY eve meal. Managed to get something right in the middle of Chinatown. Rather proud of myself ... until we got there.

There was a mix up with the booking, they thought we were going the following night. I mean, who has dinner out on CNY night? Come on guys! We had no choice but to trek around Chinatown for another restaurant. Singapore, Chinese city, CNY Eve, the night of family reunion dinner. Finding a restaurant??? In Chinatown???? No chance!

We ended up in Chijmes, the second Chinese restaurant we stumbled upon. The first had queues which would equate to about 3 hrs wait! So we couldn't believe our luck finding a Shanghainese restaurant, which is virtually empty. Well, Shanghainese is Chinese right? WRONG! I guess it being empty was a bit of a no-brainer hint. Sat down, glanced quickly at the only two available set menus, we decided to treat ourselves and went for the more expensive menu.

The first course of yu sheng came. Ok, raw salmon and various other bits for a traditional starter. It wasn't too bad, but far too big for the 3 of us. Second starter came and it was... MARINADED DUCK'S TONGUE. We just stared at it. I mean look at this stuff:

It looked like an oversized dead grasshopper! Ok, it looked gross but maybe it might taste pretty good. So I put one of these in my mouth and it's hard to describe. I didn't taste gross but it was just very difficult to eat. All hard and sticky and yuck! I had to put it back down and we didn't touch any of it.

The next few courses weren't much better either, although more edible. Until we got to the broccoli and abolone dish. The only thing we could recognise and go aahhh, this is more like it! But dessert was a disappointing plate of fruits.

(That was a forced smile. I mean who would get excited over a plate of fruits??)

And so that ended our disappointing little adult 'independant' CNY eve dinner. SIGH!
